The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) board of directors has approved a contract to build and/or re-build 4.5 miles of high-voltage transmission lines in order to connect a new substation to the grid.

The $2 million contract for the transmission lines was awarded to the L.E. Myers Co., based in Marshalltown, Iowa. The lines include one 161 kV line located near 42nd and Capehart Road to a substation at the Nebraska City Power Station, and one 69 kV line located near the Sarpy County Station to a substation on East La Platte Road.

According to the OPPD, the new substation is necessary due to growth in demand. The location and development of the new substation followed an extensive public input process involving nearby residents, public officials and other stakeholders.

Construction of the substation is expected to be completed by early 2014.
